Understanding the 4 C’s of Diamonds
Clarity
I am going to tell you what I personally think about preference in diamonds. Internally Flawless is the best you can get for clarity. I strive to create every Mark of Excellence Ring work of fine art with “IF” quality diamonds. There is a reason why I do this. It is the identity of the Ring.
However, when shopping for diamonds, of the 4 C’s (Not the Mark of Excellence Ring Collection) diamond clarity is not the most important quality to me. There are other qualities that are better buys than buying for clarity. Please keep reading to learn what that quality is.

Cut
For many people, and I agree, cut is the most important of the 4Cs. Developed by GIA in the early 1950s, color, clarity, cut and carat were determined to be the basis for International Diamond Grading System universal standard to describe diamond’s quality. A beautifully cut (polished) diamond is dazzling! Every facet displays the skill of a craftsman’s care. When the cut interacts with light, each facet and angle affects the amount of light returned to the eye. The diamond’s face-up appearance and “Wow” factor really comes from the cut and polish. It’s what makes diamond appealing – or not.
Cut Descriptions
Words like “fire,” “sparkle,” “brightness” and “pattern” are the words used to describe a beautifully cut and polished diamond. When looking at the Mark of Excellence Ring, you may hear: “Isn’t it beautiful? See how much it sparkles. See how much life this stone has, especially when you move it.”
Fire results, when white light traveling through the diamond is dispersed into a rainbow of spectral colors. For example, take the Mark of Excellence Ring into a jewelry store. Tilt and rock the ring under store spotlights. Look for red, blue, yellow or orange flashes as you rock the ring.
Above you see 10 different diamond shapes. Of these shapes, some of them sparkle and dance. Some of the others do not. Some of them are standard cuts and some of them are not. The ones that are not standard are called ‘Fancy Cuts.’ Fancy cuts can also be what ever you can creatively imagine.
From all these cut designs, the ‘radiant cuts’ and ‘brilliant cuts’ will sparkle the most if they are cut and polished correctly.
‘Emerald cuts’ are more clear, like water. They do not sparkle as much as brilliant, round, princess or radiance cuts.
